Director of Admissions
 
James River Day School seeks a full-time Director of Admissions. The Director of Admissions will serve as a member of the Advancement Team, reporting to the Associate Head of School for Advancement. The Director of Admissions will be expected to develop strong relationships with the full range of the School’s constituents and to help advance the James River Day School mission.
 
A candidate should be a self-starter, problem solver, and an effective communicator, who embodies the School’s core values. She/he will have exceptional verbal and written communication skills. She/he will have the ability to interact comfortably with a broad range of people, including students and staff from diverse backgrounds. This person will have genuine empathy for prospective families and an awareness of the needs of parents, students, faculty, staff, and administrators. She/he will ultimately be able to manage expectations and deliver admissions decisions in a manner that is honest, caring, and diplomatic.
 
The ideal candidate will offer most, or all, of the following:
    • a bachelor’s or graduate degree
    • admissions experience, preferably in independent schools
    • strong interpersonal skills with a caring and calm demeanor
    • the ability to maintain confidentiality
    • strong attention to detail
    • strong leadership, management, and recruitment skills
 
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Admissions creates and implements strategies to successfully attract and enroll a diverse student body. She/he manages the day-to-day operations of the Admissions Office, and is accountable for meeting established goals for new student enrollment.
 
The Director of Admissions will: identify prospective families, especially for kindergarten; fully enroll the kindergarten; evaluate admissions applicants, including administering admissions testing; oversee admissions committees; re-recruit current families, keeping attrition at 5% or less; maintain admissions database, including projections on enrollment; expand public awareness of the school; oversee all off- and on-campus recruitment events; assist Head of School with parent education programs; prepare monthly reports for the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees and present to the Board as needed; develop Parent Admission Network; and help new families make a smooth transition to the school. She/he will work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends; the ability and willingness to travel is necessary.

Middle School English Teacher
 
James River Day School seeks a full-time middle school English teacher. This faculty member reports to the Head of School and is responsible for teaching middle school literature, grammar, and composition. She/he will actively support the school’s vision, mission, and core values. This teacher will enable the academic, social, and personal development of adolescents in a positive learning environment.
 
The ideal candidate will offer most or all of the following:
    • a bachelor’s or graduate degree
    • a love of children
    • teaching experience (preferably in independent schools)
    • strong interpersonal skills with a caring and calm demeanor
    • attention to detail
    • a willingness to learn new things
    • exceptional verbal and written communication skills
    • the ability to interact and collaborate comfortably with students, parents, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and with differing needs
    • the ability to communicate, motivate, and understand students’ educational and emotional needs
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
This teacher will be responsible for teaching, motivating, inspiring, and assessing middle school students in English. She/he will teach the assigned curriculum, correct assignments, administer tests, evaluate student progress, keep parents informed of student progress, while being positive, collaborative, innovative, and passionate.
 
She/he will plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as discussion, group activities, and occasional lectures.
