Friday Clubs & Fine Arts
A unique aspect of the James River Day School schedule in grades 5-8 is the clubs & activities program. Students select a club or activity to participate in on Fridays during each trimester. Some clubs and activities include: Orchestra, Band, Chorus, drumming, cooking, pottery, drawing, MathCounts, Robotics, nature trail maintenance, Greenhouse Gang, Student Government Association, various technology clubs, Sci-Fi club, and more. These clubs are taught by our full-time faculty, as well as part-time specialists with expertise in music and/or art. These opportunities afford James River students a way to expand on the knowledge and experience they have gained in the typical academic courses. Please note, available activities change each trimester and these opportunities are constrained at this time by CDC and Virginia Department of Health guidelines during the pandemic.
James River offers numerous after-school enrichment opportunities during an ordinary school year. The 2020-2021 school year will necessarily be different due to the pandemic. The descriptions below are what we would normally offer; we may not be able to offer these during the pandemic. We will follow CDC and Virginia Department of Health guidelines to determine what we can offer.
The Children's Center is James River's after- and before-school care program for students from kindergarten to eighth grade. This program offers state-licensed childcare to the James River Day School community.
After-School Study Hall is located in the library for fifth through eighth grade students, while fourth grade study hall is held in a fourth grade classroom.
Individual Tutoring is available to any James River student, K-8.
