Health & Wellness
At James River Day School, the administrative team, faculty, and staff work hard to keep our students in a healthy learning environment. The school employs both a school nurse and a school counselor to support the well-being of our students. Our cleaning staff maintains a routine of cleaning the classrooms and other spaces regularly, and our teachers also clean surfaces as needed during the school day.
We hope the following resources will be of assistance to our school community. Please note that a student may not attend James River Day School unless the school has permission to treat him/her in case of an emergency. This is submitted digitally using the RenWeb/FACTS Family Portal as part of the Enrollment Packet.
All information regarding student illness must be reported directly to the school nurse (434-384-7385 x110 or [email protected]). Our nurse is also happy to answer student or parent questions pertaining to health and wellness.
What to Do If Your Student is Sick (Click to expand.)
- Do not send your child to school if they have symptoms of any illness. Please keep sick children at home. Inform the school nurse ([email protected] of any illness or illness-related absence. All COVID-19 cases must be reported directly to the School Nurse. After consultation with School Nurse and recommendations from a student’s health care provider, a student who tests positive should quarantine at home for 5 days. If moderate to severe symptoms persist, then the student may need to see their doctor and continue quarantine for the full 10 days. Please see the CDC website for current guidelines.
- Illness during the school day: To maintain the health and safety of our community, students developing a fever (100.4°F or higher), vomiting, diarrhea, head lice, or other signs/symptoms of contagious illness, including COVID-19-like symptoms, must be picked up from school as soon as possible by a parent/guardian or designated emergency contact and remain at home for treatment and recovery. Students will be isolated from others while at school awaiting their ride home.

When should a child return to school after illness?
If a child has had a fever in excess of 100.4°F in the previous 24 hours, has been vomiting due to illness, or is still within the first 24 hours of antibiotic treatment for an illness such as strep throat, that student must stay home to avoid infecting others at school.
Students must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication. Help us safeguard the health and safety of our entire school community. Follow your doctor’s orders regarding when a child should return to school following an illness.
