Summer Reading Requirements
For Rising First through Fourth Graders
Students are encouraged to reach a minimum number of AR (Accelerated Reader) points, according to their grade:
  • Rising 1st graders should read, and be read to, every day! (No AR points required.)
  • Rising 2nd graders - 4 points
  • Rising 3rd graders - 6 points
  • Rising 4th graders - 8 points

Students in 4th grade who meet the summer AR requirements will receive a homework pass to be used in the fall, with prior teacher approval.

August 15 is the last day to take AR quizzes for the summer.
For Rising Fifth through Eighth Graders
Independent reading is encouraged throughout the summer. James River requires rising 5th through 8th graders to read two specific books (to provide common text for discussion upon the students’ return in the fall), and at least one other book of their choosing.

All middle school students are required to read and take the AR quiz for the following:
  1. Chasing Space: YOUNG READERS’ EDITION by Leland Melvin
  2. The grade-specific title shown below, and
  3. One independent book choice at the student’s reading level or above
Three books total required. August 15 is the last day to take AR quizzes for the summer.
Please refer to the Taylor Media Center Summer Hours (above), so students can complete their AR requirements. If a student cannot take the quizzes over the summer, he/she may do so during the first week of school.
