Mr. Ruiz has lived in the Lynchburg area since 1994, when he moved here from his native city, San Diego, California. Jason began his teaching career in 2001, and has taught English for Campbell County, Lynchburg City, and Bedford County Schools. His last assignment prior to James River was at Staunton River High School, where he taught for seven years.
Jason joined the faculty of James River in 2011 as a middle school English teacher and occasional sound technician and musician. He feels at home here now, commenting that his experience at James River has been "fruitful and illuminating."
Things here are much different--I have grown a great deal as a result of being at James River. Perhaps the most notable change from my last experience to this one has to do to with school culture: students' curiosity is encouraged to propel them to learn. Middle school students are daring and bold--we are encouraged to foster those qualities. I first inquired about working at James River because I desired more freedom for my students and more freedom for myself in helping them achieve their full potential.
When he's not teaching, Jason enjoys playing guitar and singing with with his lovely and talented wife, Melissa. They married in May of '98 after meeting, according to her, at church; according to him, at the mall. He also enjoys photography, a hobby that has recently caught his attention: photographs capture moments much like literature.
After attending Cal-State Fullerton as a music and business major, Jason transferred to Liberty University, where he finished with an English education degree. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in creative writing from Longwood University, a program he found quite substantive. "My time at Longwood helped teach me to try to see the world through other people's eyes."
