Joy Pratt is a Lynchburg native, born and bred. She is also a James River Day School alumna; she and her brothers attended James River when it was a K-5 school. They all still have fond memories and lifelong friends from their time as Cardinals.
After graduating from E. C. Glass High School, Joy earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in art and art history from Virginia Tech. After college, She spent time studying and living in England, where she met her husband, Declan.
Upon her return to the United States, Joy earned her teaching certificate from Lynchburg College and went on to teach third grade in Bedford County Public Schools. After taking a break to raise their two children, both of whom are current James River students, Joy is thrilled to have her “dream job” teaching art at her elementary alma mater. She incorporates art history in her lessons, and her students love learning about and are inspired by diverse artists and styles, such as Van Gogh, Mondrian, Pollock, Monet, Haring, and more. Joy has enjoyed adding color to the halls at James River Day School, especially the fourth grade legacy project of decorating their own ceiling tiles. Be sure to look up when walking our halls!
At home, Joy loves to cook, paint, and read. She also enjoys traveling the world with her family and is excited for their next big adventure, an around-the-world trip later this year!
