hi I'm Peter your head of James River Day School where we cherish children and challenge them to be Scholars leaders and citizens for the 21st century in a community of active we are so glad you were here please join Mary understands our director of admissions for a tour of our exceptional learning community, and I'm delighted that you're here James River people as an independent school and we serve students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade we provide a high-quality education in a really caring learning environment that will give students an advantage for the future are learning and play spaces court all that goes on here and I'm excited to show you around just either kindergarten spaces and there's lots of vibrant and active learning that goes on here not just in kindergarten all throughout the lower school and it's the middle school all the enrichment that starts from the very beginning at James River Day School from foreign language to Art to music really enabled all of our teachers to get to know each and every child are small class size every level really enable our teachers to differentiate and meet them where they are in their Learning Journey the differentiated an active learning that we talked about in kindergarten continues throughout our lower school and on internet here in our second grade classrooms you can see that the space facilitates collaboration and activity can we also have flexible reading faces so the kids are up and moving throughout the day what are the Hallmarks of any good school is are the teachers are at the heart of the school and that's so true at James River all of our teachers are active Learners and lifelong Learners than they challenge themselves Tumblr new ideas for their classroom to collaborate with their colleagues both in an effort to deliver an excellent education but also because they want to pursue Excellence for themselves and what happens when you have a high and I'm growth mindset among your faculty is you happy students and that produces a joyful learning community other students for grass from 2nd through 3rd and awnings of 4th grade continue to support and work on developing those are academic and their leadership skills but by the time they arrived here in fourth grade they really are ready to be the leaders of the lower school year we give them lots of opportunities they can service Safety Patrol out at carpool where they open doors for the little kids and Kris appearance and wish them a good day. Also it's their first year to get to be a cardinal buddy which is a wonderful program at James River and our fourth graders get to be buddies along with a kindergartener so really by the time they arrived here they spend the year preparing to do the Middle School in the fifth grade and they're ready I'm excited to share with you our newly renovated Library when we began imagining what would a new space look like if we were to get new furniture and change things around we knew that we wanted it to be a base of community a base for collaboration and really true flexibility we can have small groups in gear doing group work classes will come in here to read or write our youngest Learners come in once a week and have a lesson and then explore the library do all of the flexible seating in the bright colors really invite our students into mixed with one another from kindergarten through 8th grade essays that really be a library but also a Community Learning space against the lower school a chance to know the middle school and incomes are middle schoolers a really good opportunity for friendship and Leadership and role-modeling one of the ways we do that is through our advice program the students in fifth through eighth grade are placed in an advisory class mixed age level with one advisor that they keep throughout all of Middle School the older students can court and provide guidance for the youngest and the younger students get to look up to these older meters didn't form relationships with their advisor and adviser really becomes a School parent for them helping them to keep up with their studies learn study habits and advocate for themselves with other t-shirt and still by the time our students graduate from James River not only do they have a really strong academic background good study skills they haven't ended confidence and inability to advocate for themselves that no matter where they go after 8th grade and set them apart from everyone else are middle school science labs are a part of our newest renovation here at James River Day School our Middle School is growing and we needed to advance so that we could support all the students that were learning we added two new science labs with up-to-date equipment and plenty of space to collaborate and ask the hard questions and find those are we also added to language arts rooms all the things with the students learn here in the middle school we focus also in allowing them opportunities to take it into the real world and see how that applies for example the greenhouse gang grow and got to take what they learn in the science lab and see how it happens in real life in the greenhouse foreign language study at James River begins in kindergarten students choose between either Spanish or French and can can you to study that language all the way through eighth grade by the time our students reach forth and then fifth grade in Middle School their reading novels and their chosen language and becoming much more conversational and skilled in that language the time they graduate all of our students have either one or two credits in French or Spanish music is a big part of an education at James River Day School are lower school students have weekly music classes and by 3rd and grades they have the opportunity to explore orchestra instruments or band instrument when they reach 5th grade they can choose between the James River Orchestra the James River Band or the James River Port these three Musical on call Zahra Rich part of our education with most of our students participating it gives them the chance to learn to play an instrument study music perform and learn to work with the group we think that music education is a vital part of developing the whole child here at James River the Arts are certainly alive at James River Day School you can see it in the classrooms and on display in the hallways are students had the opportunity both with Visual Arts and performing do it for their creative sides and develop their hold down lower school students have art every week and middle school students have the opportunity to explore the Pottery Studio continue to find their medium of choice battenfeld artistically at James River we know that students are better able to exercise their minds and learn if they have plenty of opportunities to exercise their bodies and play our lower school students get to 3 minute recess is a day to come out and enjoy our playground and play spaces are middle school students have a 20-minute break each day and PE physical activity is really an important part of child well-being and the development of the whole wild and James River we do that through plenty of playtime and participation in athletics Athletics at James River inclusive anyone can play regardless. And find a spot on that team that challenges them at their current skill level and continue to develop and improve and their sport of choice we offer cross-country soccer and volleyball basketball and Lacrosse are athletic teams at the middle school level are students an opportunity to practice commitment teamwork and sportsmanship win or lose these are things that we teach in the classroom and then say translate onto the plain beyond our character education program really not a separate program it's inter woven and everyday in every classroom and every playing field James River Day School truly is a community of Joyful learning for our students are challenged and cherish to become confident Scholars resilient leaders and compassionate citizen thank you so much for joining me and to learn even more give us a call or visit our website to contact admission
