October 1, 2020

As an educator, I feel strongly that students learn best when they are taught all together in the same classroom and in person. Not only is their academic experience better than in a virtual environment, but their social and emotional needs are also being met--needs that were so impacted during the spring and summer. It is hard to overstate the long term value to the students of a robust social-emotional connection.

As we celebrate the 25th day of school, I am proud of our students and faculty for so conscientiously following the COVID-19 protocols that help keep us safe and in-person. I am grateful to you, the parents of our students, for upholding your end of the bargain as well. The James River partnership with our families has never been stronger. The students are thriving--and isn’t that the point?

Every day we are learning new lessons about what works and what needs adjustment. Faculty and staff alike are engaged in constant dialogue and reassessment of procedures and routines as we strive to challenge and cherish your students in this new normal. We will continue to learn and adapt to ensure the physical and mental well being of the entire community.

As such, I have several updates and reminders with regard to COVID-19 and James River’s related policies and procedures.

Mask Wearing
Students are doing great work with proper mask wearing and compliance. Our expectation is for all members of the community to continue wearing masks.
  • The faculty is modeling and reinforcing proper mask wearing and ensuring that students have opportunities throughout the day for safe “mask breaks.”
  • Nurse Mace is supporting the faculty with lessons on germs and the importance of hand washing and masks to stay healthy.
One-Way Hallways
We have decided to resume our regular, two-way hallway traffic during the school day.
  • Current research explains that exposure is created through close contact, and close contact is considered within 6 feet and for longer than 15 minutes.
  • With no lockers in use, the time spent in the hall is minimal and not considered high risk (especially with mask wearing).
  • This will not affect or change arrival and dismissal procedures.
  • Two-way hallway traffic will resume Friday, October 2.
School Breaks and Family Travel
Looking ahead to the long weekend and also the Thanksgiving break, we ask that you remember your commitment to the health and safety of our school community, as agreed upon in the Wellness Partnership Agreement.
  • Please continue to distance, wear masks, and avoid large gatherings when out over the breaks.
  • Give careful thought to travel plans to ensure that you are avoiding high risk travel, activities, and destinations. (See the CDC's travel guidelines for more information about travel restrictions by state and country.)
  • Self-assess, and if you feel your activities could put your family at a greater risk for exposure to COVID-19, please consider self-quarantining following your travel and prior to your child’s return to school.
Thank you for doing your part in the daily work of helping to keep our community safe. Your support and encouragement mean a lot.
