At the end of each trimester, the faculty take time to write individualized comments for each of their students. As the Head of School, I have the privilege of reviewing the details of each child’s progress before report cards are issued. As I reflect on the importance of this admittedly time-consuming process, I am struck by how the teachers’ comments so clearly demonstrate what is at the heart of a James River education: every child is truly known and loved.

James River’s enriching, high quality program is built upon a challenging and flexible curriculum, small class sizes, and authentic interactions between active learners and knowledgeable and passionate faculty. Our intentionally small community allows teachers to really know every child, not just by name and academic ability, but by interest and character. They meet each student where they are on their learning journey and support their individual strengths and challenges.

Strong, positive relationships between teachers and students enables faculty to nurture a lifelong passion for learning and foster the growth of character-based leadership and citizenship, encouraging each child to reach his or her full potential.

Reading the personalized comments from these exceptional teachers validates what I see in the classrooms and hallways every day. We are dedicated to giving each student what he or she needs to become the best scholar, leader, and citizen possible, and this begins with truly knowing, and cherishing, each child.

I am proud of your children and grateful to our faculty. It is a privilege to be a part of this community where students are fully known and deeply supported, and it is a joy to watch your children flourish.
