Character Education

Everyone knows that James River is the best option in Lynchburg for academics. Our students

  • are strong readers and writers and can do effective oral presentations.
  • understand how scientists study the world and how historians study the past.
  • have familiarity with a second language.
  • have an appreciation for the fine and performing arts.
  • understand the importance of lifelong fitness.
  • possess strong study skills.
  • are able to work in a group as a contributing member of a team.
  • are able to see and appreciate multiple viewpoints, cultures, styles, and opinions.

A solid academic program is important and necessary, of course, but it is our Character Education that really sets James River apart. Our teachers work daily to instill the tenets of good character in our students. We work to make sure our students are trustworthy, honest, caring, responsible, respectful, and fair. Character education is not just an add-on program or something we concentrate on occasionally. Character education is integrated into everything we do every day. Our students are known throughout the community for their good character as much as for their academic prowess.

Each day, all our students recite the Character Pledge:

I pledge to do my best to show strength of character each day. I can act responsibly, show respect, show I care, be a good citizen, be trustworthy and be fair in all that I do.

As a recent alum so eloquently put it, “I am thankful I went to James River because of just how much it taught me. I learned about character and education but mostly how to treat others.”

Examples of this good character abound each day in the classrooms and halls of James River. I am proud of our dedication to our mission. We are preparing not only scholars, but citizens of excellent character who will impact the world.
