This past Monday (3/28) evening was an auspicious time at James River. The school hosted an event geared toward our families who represent cultural diversity. This gathering has been in the planning stages for some time, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The DEI committee of the Board of Trustees partnered with the administration to host the meet and greet, which was attended by approximately 50 parents and 40 children. The feeling that night was one of optimism and momentum.
One of the four pillars of James River’s Strategic Plan is to broaden our community in a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We know that simply inviting different kinds of people to join our community will not result in a diverse culture. We must “make room at the table” for them, letting them know they are welcome and have an equitable chance to participate. A sense of belonging is essential for all, and this week’s gathering was just a start as we work intentionally toward a more diverse and inclusive school community. It was an evening of building friendships and community.
I look forward to future happenings like this one that help us make progress toward the diversity we hope to achieve. My thanks to all who have worked to help us move ahead. Let's keep it going!
