“My thoughts are like waffles–the first few don’t look too good.” -- Marilyn Vos Savant
It was great to see many of you at Sunday’s event with Lenore Skenazy. I hope that it sparked good conversations with your families. It reminded me of what we do very well at James River to promote childhood independence and sparked ideas for ways we can improve in other ways. If you missed the event, it was recorded. The recording is available through your FACTS Family Portal. Once signed in, the recording is linked in the announcements on the "School Home" page within the portal.
The start of the new year was a bit bumpy with our weather delays. I am so grateful that we didn’t have to manage some of the challenges that faced other schools in Virginia; however, our students and teachers have had to navigate the loss of outside time with the remaining ice on the ground. It highlights the need for my annual reminder that the transition back to school after the Holiday Break can be challenging for some students (and adults), especially going into the third week of January. Your child (or you) might be a little more irritable, more emotional, less patient, more tired, or more hungry than usual. This is a normal part of the year, and it might be exacerbated by the lack of outside play. We have returned to outside recess and middle school break, but the play areas are smaller with the residual ice. To navigate this seasonal challenge, be sure to give yourself the rest and provide your children (of any age) the opportunity to rest as well. We will get through this together!
