Tradition and Service (October 9, 2025)

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
— Greek proverb

I am still replaying last week’s Fourth-Grade One Miler in my head. It has become one of my favorite community events. It is always a joy to watch our students work hard toward a goal and persevere, and it is a testament to the strength of our community to see the younger students cheer or offer moral support in the final laps. This year, we set two records for this event — the winner ran the mile in under 6 minutes, and the entire fourth grade ran it in under 12 minutes. Kudos to our runners for their preparation and drive.

And, just yesterday, our eighth graders participated in community service at Lynchburg Grows, followed by a leadership retreat at Peaksview Park. I joined the eighth graders at their service event and thoroughly enjoyed the time outside with them and working alongside them to help support an incredible local organization. I daresay the students had a great deal of fun as well, getting their hands dirty in the gardens. Next week, our leaders of the lower school, fourth grade, will have a morning of service as well.

I hope everyone enjoys the four-day weekend and finds time to get outdoors, spend time with family, and get some much-needed rest.

Let’s Fly!
