The Book Fair begins next week, and I cannot be more excited. I have a deep love of reading, and I love the opportunity to motivate young people to find books they love. Not only does reading (yes, audiobooks count) improve cognitive skills like vocabulary development, acquisition of background knowledge, and comprehension strategies, but it also helps to improve attention spans and reduce distractibility that might be associated with screen time. As Daniel Willingham, Ph.D., noted in his 2017 book The Reading Mind, reading raises a child’s threshold for boredom. Sharing the love of reading as a community and with your family on family night has a profound impact on how much your child will grow as a reader. I look forward to seeing the joy in our students’ eyes as they connect with a new book to take home.
