Community Support and Service (October 8, 2026)

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” —L.M. Montgomery

October brings fall weather, but it also brings a plethora of events. We kicked off the month with our Book Fair, and I cannot thank Betsy Rhodes and our parent volunteers enough for their support. Since taking over as Media Center Coordinator, Mrs. Rhodes has transformed the library into a true community hub while cultivating a culture of readers at James River. It was great to see the excitement all week, and I look forward to what is in store next year!

Last Friday, we hosted our annual Fourth Grade One Miler. It is a joy to watch our community support our fourth graders as they strive to improve their fitness, reach goals, and celebrate each other’s victories. We also hosted a community service project with Cardinal Buddies to support Lynchburg Grows. Students decorated canvas bags that our eighth-grade students will donate when they visit Lynchburg Grows next week. I am sure the guests who shop at Lynchburg Grows will appreciate the bags.

Don’t forget that our teachers will have a Professional Day on Friday, October 9, so students will have no school, and everyone will enjoy an extra day off on Monday, October 12, in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day. I hope this time off gives everyone a chance to enjoy the cooler weather and prepare for the busy month ahead.

Be sure to read on about next week’s Spirit Week and upcoming preparations for the Halloween Carnival.

Let’s Fly!
