Being a Crew at JRDS (October 22, 2026)

“A crew is not simply a group of people who share space or proximity. It is defined by shared risk, interdependence...” –Terry Moore, “The Necessity of Being a Crew”

In our opening meetings, I shared an article with our faculty, “The Necessity of Being a Crew.” Drawing on the experiences of the Artemis II crew that orbited the moon this past spring, it discusses the importance of a “crew” working towards a shared mission, even when we all have different roles within the school. I am proud of the work our faculty and staff have done this year to live our mission daily as a crew.

In just the last few weeks, our faculty have led field trips, designed a spirit week to celebrate our student-athletes and Hispanic Heritage Month, collaborated to create a school-wide service project for Lynchburg Grows, and organized a whole-school assembly to watch the Opera on the James perform in the Carrington Fieldhouse. These thoughtful moments not only bring joy to our community, but also give our students learning opportunities outside of the classroom to grow their curiosity, empathy, and leadership skills.

Tonight, we will welcome our second- and third-grade families to campus for a fun music program, which is always a special treat, and next week we will host the Halloween Parade and Carnival.

Let’s Fly!
