“I would rather walk with a friend in the dark than alone in the light.” -Helen Keller
Each year, the holiday season seems to arrive sooner and sooner, but as my children will tell anyone, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Good food? Check. Time with family and friends? Check. A time set aside to express gratitude for all that we have and get to experience as humans on this amazing planet? CHECK! While I don’t believe that gratitude should be reserved for one day or month of the year, November is always a welcome reminder to return to the practice. In the book Making Grateful Kids: The Science of Building Character, the authors write, “Gratitude alerts people to the valuable relationships in their lives, it reinforces the kindness of their benefactors, and it motivates them to reciprocate kindness…Its experience and practice promotes positive social relationships with others and nurtures trusting relationships, benefiting society at large.” I encourage everyone to model gratitude for their children, even if this holiday season is the catalyst you need to build a family practice.
Lastly, if you do not receive Lynchburg Living magazine, I wanted to recognize our Director of Enrollment Management, Matthew Farley, who was recognized as a Community Champion for his work with the Scouts and the Lynchburg Pops Community Band. Way to show the Cardinal spirit in service to Lynchburg, Mr. Farley!
