Barbie Bungee Jumps in Algebra I

The Algebra I lab the students most enjoy every year is Bungee Jumping Barbie. To begin, students gather data by seeing how far Barbie "jumps" with two, four, six, and eight rubber bands. Plotting the data points collected, the students do a linear regression with their graphing calculators and generate a line of best fit.  Each team uses the slope of this line to extrapolate how many rubber bands are needed for Barbie to jump from the fire escape landing. The goal is to give Barbie the biggest thrill without breaking her neck! The winners are happy with bragging rights, but Mrs. Hardison usually gives them a prize as well. Afterwards they discuss the high stakes math involved in a real bungee jump; no one wants to get that math wrong!
