The seventh grade pre-algebra classes put their math skills to use by helping plan the display for two middle school art projects. The seventh grade art classes are working on age-progression self portraits. One math class had to decide how 35 portraits would best be arranged. This included determining what dimensions would be the most appropriate for each drawing and planning the spacing down to the square unit around each pieces, as well as the spacing of the entire display. The sixth grade art classes have been studying pointillism and are going to recreate the famous painting by Georges Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jette. The painting will be divided into sections for each sixth grade student to recreate. The other math class was tasked with planning the best way to do this. This included determining the dimensions of the new painting, making sure it was proportionally correct, of course; as well as deciding the best way to subdivide the painting.
We'll keep updating this article as the two projects progress; so stay tuned!
