Thank you for our family and friends who have gathered here today and bless each one of them. - a verse from the Thankful Hearts blessing

At today's Thankful Hearts Feasts, I told a story about an angel and a turkey. The angel -- sewn by my mother many years ago -- was given to me by a former colleague. As it turns out, the angel decorated her family's home during the holidays for many years. In returning it to me, my friend reminded me that her family and mine were connected, that we shared a bond within our community. It was a heartfelt gift, and for me a reminder of the power of belonging.

The turkey was given to me today by a James River student, a gift to welcome me to this community and to celebrate the Thankful Hearts feast. Like the angel, the turkey represents more than a thoughtful gift. It serves as a reminder of the joy it is to be part of the James River community.

As the verse above states so eloquently, we are thankful for our families and friends -- whether or not they joined us today -- and equally thankful for the blessings of small gestures of kindness that we receive along the journey. I hope you enjoyed today's festivities as much as I did, and I hope you celebrate Thanksgiving with joy and love in your hearts.
