Summer Fun

Summer is a great time to try out a new skill, explore a new passion, or simply savor the company of friends while doing something enjoyable. Take a look through the many choices below and choose the ones that appeal to your children. When learning is fun, children will want to keep learning new things. You can depend on James River to help keep your child engaged this summer! To sign your children up, use the "Sign up for Summer Fun" button in the left column or at the bottom. If signing up more than one child, please complete a separate web form for each child. If you have further questions about these fun classes, please contact John Gillum (gillum_j@jamesriverdayschool.org).

Build-A-Trail
Did you know that JRDS used to have a nature trail? It’s time to bring it back better than ever. Our goal is to rebuild the nature trail through the woods next to the athletic fields. Depending on time and interest, projects may include bridge building, trail clearing, tree identification, and installation of signs, plus map making, bird-house making, rock painting, as well as planting native trees or flowers. Students will be closely supervised in the use of any tools. This camp will be kept small, giving campers lots of input on the direction of this project. Students will build something truly useful for our community and gain hands-on experience. This is a great opportunity for a small group of people to do something big.

One-Room Schoolhouse
One of the most popular programs at James River Day School is back again this summer – and better than ever! The nostalgic one-room schoolhouse, which once offered students a unique and specialized education, has disappeared from our fast-paced culture, but James River has successfully brought back the concept of the one-room schoolhouse to ease the transition into the next school year. We offer specialized instruction in math, grammar, and Spanish or French. This program furnishes students with a head start by providing them with individualized lessons and differentiated instruction in the school’s core curriculum areas, plus organizational assistance for students who need a little help getting it all together. Students will transition smoothly into a new school year at James River Day School by getting set up and ready to go ahead of time!
Instructors: A talented team of James River Day School’s expert educators
