Build literacy skills by …
- making time to read together! Take books for in-car entertainment all summer long or build a tent-fort and read aloud to your children.
- visiting the local libraries (most have summer reading programs with fun activities and incentives)
- discovering the latest books at local bookstores.
Here are some other ways to build on what your child's been learning.
- Keep a journal of your adventures together.
- Create a book, comic, or graphic novel.
- Play “unplugged” math games to sharpen math skills.
- Get out the chalk, shaving cream, or paints, and play!
- Google "child-friendly home science experiments" and find all kinds of science fun!
- And, sign up for summer camps. James River offers wonderful summer camps.
Let your child’s curiosity be the major driver of learning this summer, and have fun making memories with your child while they’re learning! It will be our secret that it is all to keep their brains and bodies active.
Enjoy your summer!
